On a gloomy Friday morning, Japan's most avid Apple Inc. fans, armed and dressed in homemade gear and sandwich boards fashioned after the company's iconic smartphone, eagerly welcomed the iPhone 5 after a long, patient wait--of nearly a week in the case of one aficionado.
About 750 people were lined up outside Apple's store in the posh Ginza neighborhood as of 10 minutes before opening time, chanting with the usual revved-up fanfare. A few blocks down, a digital countdown clock ticked outside a Softbank store where several hundred more geeks had lined up.
Masayoshi Son, the founder and CEO of Softbank Corp. , one of the two carriers that service Apple products in Japan, led a ceremonious cheer when the count reached zero. At 8 a.m., Japan became the second market after Australia to begin selling the slimmer and longer iPhone 5.
